Marriage Aside, Basic Rights Still An Issue for Many Gays and Lesbians

For many lesbian and gay people outside of the country’s major urban areas, where there are large, visible and relatively safe gay and lesbian enclaves, the issue is not so much marriage-equality but protection from hate crimes, domestic partner benefits and adoption.

Not that hate crimes do not happen in big cities. On Saturday, the popular gay performer, Kevin Aviance, was gay bashed on the streets of New York City’s East Side.
