Karl Rove’s Gay Family

The stepfather of President Bush’s chief political consultant Karl Rove was gay, a new book argues. The Architect: Karl Rove and the Master Plan for Absolute Power (Crown Books/Random House) by Wayne Slater and James Moore unveils Karl Rove’s “gay past,” showing him on the one hand to be a loving stepson of an openly gay man and a deplorable political strategist on the other.

According to the book, Karl Rove’s stepfather, geologist Louis Rove, left the family in 1969 when the younger Rove was just 19. Louis Rove moved to Palm Springs, California, where he eventually retired and maintained a quiet but active life in the city’s older gay community.

The book quotes friends of the elder Rove as saying Karl Rove was a loving and attentive son who visited his stepfather in Palm Springs periodically, having dinner with Louis and his gay friends.

Dana Perino, deputy White House press secretary who has openly denounced the book, even argues, “Karl was very close to his father. He was the executor of his father’s estate and his power of attorney. Karl loves his father very much, and his father loved him and was very proud of his son.”

Nobody thus far has denied Louis sexuality or that Karl Rove loved his stepfather, which makes it all the more disturbing that Karl Rove was so willing to gay bait in the 2004 Presidential election.

Lucky for Louis Rove, he wasn’t around to witness this unforgivable abuse of political power. Louis died from respiratory ailments in July of 2004.
