Melissa Etheridge, Lesbians In Advertising

The first celebrity of my generation to come out of the closet, Melissa Etheridge has been the face of lesbian and gay life in the music industry, popular culture, and even in advertising, which is itself a form of representation and validation, for the past 15 or so years.

I found these two ads from the commercial closet web site (check it out of you haven’t already). The first is a Cartier ad that ran in the December 2005 issue of Vanity Fair featuring Etheridge and partner Tammy Lynn Michaels. The text reads, “Cartier’s Menotte handcuff bracelets symbolize everlasting love and attachment. Here, the elegant white gold pieces seal the bond between Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels, who celebrated their love at a commitment ceremony this summer.” A touch strange to use hancuffs as a symbol of everlasting love, but anway… The second is a 1995 ad for PETA that Etheridge did with her ex-partner of 12 years, Julie Cypher.
