David Hockney’s The Splash sold at a Sotheby’s Holdings Inc. London auction this week for a record 5.4 million dollars.

The aqua velvet painting once owned by gay movie mogul David Geffen captures the precise moment when the human body enters a swimming pool from a diving board. The scene, colored by an optimistic sunlight know only to California in the mid-1960s, also perfectly embodies the UK born Hockney’s exuberant early years as a English transplant joyfully living the California dream.

New York art advisers Eykyn Maclean bought the painting.
