Maybe it’s not as cold in Michigan as we think.

The Forest Hills school board in Grand Rapids today said it would not ban the Gay-Straight Alliance student club functioning at the district’s three high schools. The board spent $12,000 on legal fees responding to some parents’ objections.

Referring to a federal law that says schools must grant “equal access” to after-hours student groups, from Bible studies to chess clubs, school board President Doug Vander Laan said, “We have a moral obligation to follow the law.”

Fair enough. The law stands outside morality for a good reason.
