Brigham Young University decided not to rehire a part-time professor after learning that he publically opposed the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in an op-ed piece for a local newspaper.

The professor, Jeffrey Nielsen’s stand on this issue goes against that of the the Mormon church, which has spent millions of dollars campaigning against gay marriage. After learning he had been let go, Nielsen said he “is sticking by his views and his religion. I have no desire to be anything but a member of the church.”
