John Edwards responded to Mary Cheney’s calling him a “total slime” for saying to Dick Cheney during their 2004 debate that he respected the Cheney family’s willingness ‘”to talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter.’’

Mary Cheney claims that she mouthed “go fu#4% yourself” at Edwards during the debate, and reports in her book, “Now It’s My Turn,” that she believes Edwards tried to use her sexuality as a political tool against her father.

Attending a labor rally in New York on Wednesday, Edwards says he stands by his comments.

“What I did was express my respect and admiration for the way the Cheney family, along with millions of other families, have embraced members of their family, and if I remember the vice president was very gracious in reacting to that.”

Bottom line: Edwards is slimy for trying to pass off the motives of his political maneuvering as admiration and respect. BUT the Cheney family should check itself for representing an administration that out and out discriminates against gay people. AND Mary Cheney has a lot of nerve getting angry at Edwards and Kerry for trying to use her sexuality as a political tool – when it was in fact her political party- that made sexual orientation a voting point in the election.
